Starlab’s Favorite Spots in Union Square

Somerville’s Union Square has been the subject of a whole lot of press in recent years, often appearing on the latest list of “Hippest Neighborhoods In The World.”. It also happens to be home to Starlab Studios, which began at a previous location on Prospect St. in 2009 and now lives on at 453 Somerville Ave. Three of our five core team members are Union Square residents. And I myself only recently moved elsewhere after a five year stay. Needless to say, Union Square has played a huge role in shaping Starlab.

As we are extremely proud to be part of the thriving small business community here in Union Square, I’ve compiled a small list of the many neighborhood spots that we recommend you check out while on a session break at Starlab, or if you just find yourself in the area!

A4 Pizza – These guys have amazing gourmet pizza and the coolest staff around. Located immediately next door from Starlab, we find ourselves here more often than we’d care to admit. Ideal for winding down after a late night at the studio, they are open until 1AM on weekdays and until 2AM on weekends and offer half-off pizzas after 11pm! Seriously, go here.

Neighborhood Restaurant – Very appropriately named, this is an old-school Somerville restaurant that I suspect hasn’t changed much in decades. Neighborhood is best in the Spring and Summer when their outdoor patio, encased in traditional grapevines, opens up and you can enjoy an enormous omelet in the sun. Includes complimentary coffee, small juice, fruit or cream of wheat and pastries!

Somervelo – This is a bit biased, as Somervelo co-founder J.T. Hargrove is an old friend of Starlab, but this place is the very definition of a local business built from the ground up by passionate folks. They will tune-up and spruce-up your bike for a fair price. If you’re looking for a snobby bicycle mechanic that talks down to you, look elsewhere!

Bull McCabe’s – This is a great little bar for a quick drink and a snack. With a super-friendly staff and excellent bar food, Bull McCabe’s is an ideal spot to take a break from a recording session and recharge.

That all of these fine establishments (and many more) are within a 5 minute walk of Starlab Studios says everything about what this neighborhood has to offer. We couldn’t be happier to be a part of it!
